NEW ORLEANS – On a day when people across the country pause to give thanks, some say the most fulfilling way to spend Thanksgiving is to help those in need. “This is my 26th year serving the homeless,” said Roberto Espinoza. “The first year, I was the homeless.” Espinoza has been drug-free for a quarter of a century, and every Thanksgiving, he gives back to the program that helped save his life. “I’m so grateful God put the Bridge House in my life, and put recovery in my life,” said Espinoza. Each year, the Bridge House alum helps serve hundreds of people who turn to the organization for a warm Thanksgiving meal. Organizers say between 400 and 600 people in need spent the holiday at the former location on Camp Street, where the Thanksgiving event took place. The organization also gave away free clothing, toiletries and blankets.
